Scripps News hires Barrett as biz and tech correspondent

Scripps News has hired journalist Maura Barrett as its business and technology correspondent.
In that role, Barrett will cover the intersection of the economy, technology and science — tracking how innovation, markets and policy shape our economy and climate future.
Barrett comes to Scripps News with a decade of experience reporting and producing for NBC News, where she covered pivotal stories across 40 states and three countries. As an NBC News correspondent based in Chicago, her reporting took her from the White House briefing room to wildfire-ravaged mountains in Colorado, the streets of Portland, D.C. and Philadelphia through protests and tear gas, underwater along La Parguera reef in Puerto Rico, and into communities across the country navigating the impacts of environmental policy, reproductive rights and LGBTQ+ legislation.
Before that, Barrett was a campaign reporter embedded on the 2020 trail, and a producer for NBC News’ Business & Tech Unit, where she covered the 2018 trade war, social media disinformation and the development and social impacts of artificial intelligence.
Barrett’s work has earned her a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media, along with several other national award nominations. She is a Curve Foundation Emerging Journalist Fellow and an alum of the Loyola Law School Journalist Fellowship. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and is currently completing a sustainability certificate from the University of Colorado Boulder.
